What is your role at the DIS?

I am a Counsel with the DIS Casemanagement Team.  That means that I contribute to the administration of proceedings according to the DIS Arbitration Rules and provide assistance to the parties and the arbitrators in conducting efficient proceedings.

What path led you to the DIS?

My father was a Catalan from Barcelona, who ended up living in France and Germany. I followed his lead and studied and lived abroad (France, Spain, and the UK). My first contacts with arbitration proceedings were ex aequo et bono construction while arbitrations working as a lawyer for a Spanish law firm. I was immediately hooked on arbitration and, after completing my PhD, moved to London, where I had the opportunity to work within WilmerHale’s arbitration practice on international commercial and investment arbitrations, both as a party representative and tribunal secretary.

With all that great and diverse experience, I felt that I was still missing the institutional perspective on arbitration proceedings and the DIS felt like the best fit for me to gain that important perspective.

What do you particularly appreciate about your work?

I appreciate that my work is incredibly diverse in terms of the arbitration proceedings that I administer. Each arbitration is unique and calls for individualized solutions, within the framework of the DIS Arbitration Rules. I also like that I work in a very fast-paced environment that challenges me to swiftly provide solutions to both novel and recurring queries and issues. Last but not least, I love the team spirit at DIS in general and within the Casemanagement Team in particular.

What motivates you?

Providing the best possible framework and resources to the participants of arbitrations administered by the DIS. Each time proceedings are closed (by award or otherwise, e.g. by settlement) a dispute is resolved. That in itself is rewarding to me. My main motivation is that the participants in these proceedings perceive that their dispute is “in good hands” and that they are getting the support they need.

How would you describe the DIS in three key words?

Experience. Expedience. Excellence.

Tell us a fun fact we should know about you?

I am originally from Bonn – one could say that by joining the DIS I returned to the fold.
