Hamburg International Arbitration Days 2026

The Hamburg International Arbitration Days (HIAD) consist of a multitude of events that annually gather arbitration practitioners and academics from all around the world in the city of Hamburg to discuss and exchange insights on various aspects of international arbitration.

The HIAD place a particular focus on creating an intimate setting for fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the field of international arbitration with in-depth discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities. The program includes the Luther Lecture and the HIAD Conference at Bucerius Law School, workshops on current topics in international arbitration, a networking dinner and the CAM-CCBC Hamburg Pre-Moot.

Arbitral Institutions play an important role in international arbitration. They shape the discussion about arbitration, influence the developments and are often the voice of the arbitration community. Their rules provide the procedural framework for many arbitrations and the administrative decisions taken at the various stages of the arbitral proceedings have a considerable influence on the quality of the process and its result.

Luther Dispute Resolution Lecture 2026 - Arbitration and human rights - Friends or foe? by Sir Tim Eicke KCMG KC LLD (h.c.)

At their origins, both international arbitration and human rights were intended, alongside other mechanisms, to serve as essential components of a rules-based international order and were seen as expressions of what the international rule of law might look like. They were (and are) a means by which the arbitrary exercise of state power is replaced by the exercise of state power subject to independent justice/oversight. However, not only are both (individually and separately) increasingly under attack, they are also frequently seen as being in conflict with each other.

Drawing on his extensive experience as an international judge and advocate, Sir Tim will, in this 9th Luther Lecture, discuss the relationship between international arbitration and human rights in the context of the current challenges to the rules-based international order.
